Riots In Oakland Over Police Shooting Of Unarmed Black Man
A protest over the fatal shooting by a BART police officer of an unarmed black man mushroomed into several hours of violence Wednesday night as demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set several cars ablaze and blocked streets in downtown Oakland. The roving mob expressed fury at police and frustration over society's racial injustice. Yet the demonstrators were often indiscriminate, frequently targeting the businesses and prized possessions of people of color. They smashed a hair salon, a pharmacy and several restaurants. Police in riot gear tried to control the crowd, but some people retreated along 14th Street and bashed cars along the way. The mob smashed the windows at Creative African Braids on 14th Street, and a woman walked out of the shop holding a baby in her arms. "This is our business," shouted Leemu Topka, the black owner of the salon she started four years ago. "This is our shop. This is what you call a protest?" Wednesday night's vandalism victims had nothing to do with the shooting death by a BART police officer of Oscar Grant on New Year's Day - but that did little to sway the mob. "I feel like the night is going great," said Nia Sykes, 24, of San Francisco, one of the demonstrators. "I feel like Oakland should make some noise. This is how we need to fight back. It's for the murder of a black male." Sykes, who is black, had little sympathy for the owner of Creative African Braids. "She should be glad she just lost her business and not her life," Sykes said. She added that she did have one worry for the night: "I just hope nobody gets shot or killed." The protest had started calmly shortly after 3 p.m. at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland, where BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle shot 22-year-old Grant of Hayward a week ago. BART shut down the station well into the evening commute, although the demonstration there was peaceful. However, shortly after nightfall, a group of roughly 200 protesters split off and headed toward downtown Oakland, prompting the transit agency to close the Lake Merritt and 12th Street stations. The group wreaked havoc through much of downtown, drawing hundreds of police in riot gear. It wasn't until roughly 10:40 p.m that police clamped down on the mob, arresting dozens who were cornered near the Paramount Theatre, and bringing an end to the mayhem. Earlier in the evening, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums met the mob on 14th Street, urging calm and leading them on a walk to City Hall, where he gave a speech. "I sense your frustration," he told the crowd. "I understand that you've lost confidence in a process because you've seen what you believe is a homicide ... But listen to me, we are a community of people. We are civilized people. We are a nation of laws. Dellums told protesters that he had asked the Oakland Police Department to investigate the shooting. "I have asked Oakland police to engage in a fair, parallel investigation, the way you'd investigate any homicide in Oakland," he said. "If that leads to an arrest, that's what it would lead to." "I'm asking people to disperse," the mayor said to the couple hundred people in the crowd. "Let's leave in a spirit of peace." But soon after, a man shouted "that's the modern day lynching" and the mob quickly continued its rampage, smashing at least seven storefronts on 17th street between Franklin and Webster streets. They also smashed eight cars, including four belonging to the City of Oakland. Other protesters marched on BART's 12th Street Station about 7 p.m., prompting the transit agency to close the downtown hub station even as it was reopening the Lake Merritt and Fruitvale stations. The mob blocked the intersection of 14th and Broadway, near the downtown BART station entrance. As police put on helmets and gas masks and stood in a line formation, some demonstrators held signs that read, "Your idea of justice?" and "Jail Killer Cops."

KO - Porn Industry Requests Bailout
Jan. 7: Village Voice columnist Michael Musto talks about whether Hustlers Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis are serious about their inquiries regarding a bailout for the porn industry. An article in next month's Atlantic asks, "Is porn recession proof?" According to porn magnate Larry Flynt and "Girls Gone Wild" king Joe Francis, the answer is no. TMZ reports that the pornographer pair is heading to Washington to ask for a $5 billion porn bailout: "With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind," Flynt says. "It's time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America." Francis sees his industry like the big three automakers, only BIGGER: "Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation's most important businesses; we feel we deserve the same consideration." In the Atlantic article, Tom Johansmeyer reports that AdultVest, a hedge fund run by Francis Koenig that invests in porn-related assets, was up 50% in 2008 (a number that Joe Wiesenthal at ClusterStock says ought to be taken with a grain of salt). Johansmeyer goes on to discuss the recession effect on the porn industry: Relatively small, fragmented, and unaccustomed to outside investment, the U.S. porn industry (which generated roughly $12 billion in 2007) is some&173;what buffered from today's credit crunch, but it has its own problems. Video sales have been falling by 15 percent a year since 2005, and online content doesn't deliver the returns it used to, now that Web sites such as RedTube and PornHub basically give it away. Struggling companies need investors to help right their operations, and those that are thriving in a brutal market need funding for growth. Enter Koenig and AdultVest. He sees the porn downturn as temporary and believes that technological improvements will trigger a turnaround. One example: iPorn, a start-up in AdultVest's portfolio that is developing an application to deliver porn to the Apple iPod. "The industry's not going anywhere," Koenig says. "You've got 6 billion people on the planet," he laughs, "and they're all horny."

World's Best - Mule Saves Woman From Fire
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. — Jolene Solomon is beginning the new year with her life, her mule named Lou and little else. The Southern Standard in McMinnville reported Solomon had just finished eating supper on New Year's Day when Lou's braying and acting up got her attention. Solomon, 63, who lived alone, stepped outside, she saw her house was on fire. She called 911 and as she waited for firefighters, her home and everything in it burned to the ground. She said her father bought Lou years ago to help her and her late sister, Blue, around the farm. It took Lou months to get over the loss of her sister. Solomon said she has 'lost it all', but credits Lou with saving her life. Jolene is staying with family members and plans to rebuild her home. The home was built by her grandfather and she had lived there all her life.

Joe The Plumber - War Correspondent
TOLEDO, Ohio - Joe The Plumber is putting down his wrenches and picking up a reporter's notebook. Wurzelbacher (WUR'-zuhl-bah-kur) says he'll spend 10 days covering the fighting. He tells WNWO-TV in Toledo that he wants to let Israel's "'Average Joes' share their story." Wurzelbacher gained attention during the final weeks of the campaign when he asked Barack Obama about his tax plan. He later joined Republican John McCain on the campaign trail. At one stop, he agreed with a McCain supporter who asked if he believed a vote for Obama was a vote for the death of Israel.

Mom Takes Baby To Bar, Gets Drunk, Breast Feeds
Middletown, Connecticut police have accused a Durham mom of bringing her infant daughter to a bar, drinking and then later breast feeding while she drank more booze. Allanah Earley, 36, took her 3-week-old daughter to a bar, got drunk, then started stumbling around Middletown in the cold with the child, police said. She then made it to a friend's house, where she kept drinking and began breast feeding the baby. Earley couldn't stand up straight as police interviewed her. Her speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot according to police. She admitted bringing the infant to the bar and consuming approximately seven drinks. Earley was charged with risk of injury to a minor and is being held on a $10,000 bond.

Atheists Post Ads On Buses
The advertisement on the bus was fairly mild, just a passage from the Bible and the address of a Christian Web site. But when Ariane Sherine, a comedy writer, looked on the Web site in June, she was startled to learn that she and her nonbelieving friends were headed straight to hell, to &128;&156;spend all eternity in torment. Thats a bit extreme, she thought, as well as hard to prove. If I wanted to run a bus ad saying Beware — there is a giant lion from London Zoo on the loose! or The bits in orange juice arent orange but plastic — don't drink them or you'll die! I think I might be asked to show my working and back up my claims, Ms. Sherine wrote in a commentary on the Web site of The Guardian. And then she thought, how about putting some atheist messages on the bus, as a corrective to the religious ones? And so were planted the seeds of the Atheist Bus Campaign, an effort to disseminate a godless message to the greater public. When the organizers announced the effort in October, they said they hoped to raise a modest $8,000 or so. But something seized peoples imagination. Supported by the scientist and author Richard Dawkins, the philosopher A. C. Grayling and the British Humanist Association, among others, the campaign raised nearly $150,000 in four days. Now it has more than $200,000, and on Tuesday it unveiled its advertisements on 800 buses across Britain. Theres probably no God, the advertisements say. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life. Spotting one of the buses on display at a news conference in Kensington, passers-by were struck by the unusual message. Not always positively. I think its dreadful, said Sandra Lafaire, 76, a tourist from Los Angeles, who said she believed in God and still enjoyed her life, thank you very much. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I dont like it in my face. But Sarah Hall, 28, a visitor from Australia, said she was happy to see such a robust example of freedom of speech. Whatever floats your boat, she said. Inspired by the London campaign, the American Humanist Association started running bus advertisements in Washington in November, with a more muted message. Why believe in a god? the ads read, over a picture of a man in a Santa suit. Just be good for goodness sake. Although Australian atheists were refused permission to place advertisements on buses saying, Atheism: Sleep in on Sunday mornings, the British effort has been striking in the lack of outrage it has generated. The Methodist Church, for instance, said it welcomed the campaign as a way to get people to talk about God. Across Britain, we are used to being bombarded by religious interests, he said, not just Christians, but other religions as well, who seem to think that they have got a God-given right to propagandize. Next week, the Atheist Bus Campaign plans to place 1,000 advertisements in the subway system, featuring enthusiastic quotations from Emily Dickinson, Albert Einstein, Douglas Adams and Katharine Hepburn. An interesting element of the bus slogan is the word probably, which would seem to be more suited to an Agnostic Bus Campaign than to an atheist one. Mr. Dawkins, for one, argued that the word should not be there at all.

6 Year Old Drives 10 Miles To School
WASHINGTON - The word "miracle" can be overused. But when a 6-year-old boy drives a Ford Taurus for more than 10 miles, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic, slams into a utility pole and no one gets hurt, well, maybe miracle is appropriate. That's what happened Monday in Virginia, when the 1st grader missed his school bus and decided to drive his mom's car to elementary school so he wouldn't miss breakfast and PE, authorities said Tuesday. "It's a miracle that somebody didn't get killed," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins, of the boy's drive along Northumberland Highway. The boy's parents were arrested and charged with felony child endangerment. Wilkins said the father, David Dodson, 40, was under court order not to leave the 6-year-old and his 4-year-old sibling alone with their mother, Jacqulyn Waltman, 26, at their home in the town of Wicomico Church. But Dodson left for work at 6:30 a.m., and Waltman was still asleep when the 6-year-old missed the bus and drove off at 7:40 a.m. for Northumberland Elementary School, Wilkins said. The boy was placed in foster care. Sgt. Thomas Cunningham of the Virginia State Police said the boy is not particularly tall for his age and was "possibly standing" while driving the Taurus. Wilkins said the child had an idea about how to start, propel and steer the car from playing video games. Once he got going, the boy navigated across a bridge spanning the Great Wicomico River. He also made it through two intersections, Wilkins said, and then was "doing a pretty great rate of speed" as he passed cars on a two-lane road while not wearing a seat belt. The boy had gone 10.4 miles and was about a mile and a half from his school, the sheriff said, when he decided to cross the double line and pass again. But this time, he saw a tractor-trailer coming toward him in the other lane. He quickly whipped the car back into his lane, but the car swerved out of control and then struck a utility pole on the rear passenger side. Northumberland deputies Jeff VanLandingham and Roger Briney arrived first. "He was crying, hysterical," Briney said, "not from any pain; he was just adrenalined up on fright." Briney said another motorist said she'd been driving 60 m.p.h., and the boy had sped past her. Briney said he unzipped the boy's coat to check for injuries, found none, zipped it back up and the boy turned and walked away. "I said, 'Where are you going?' " Briney said. "He said, 'My school's right over there. I'm late.' I said, 'We'll get you to school.' "

Elderly Man Beaten, Robbed Of Casino Winnings
If you hit the jackpot at a Atlantic City casino, be very mindful of who'&128;&153;s watching you. That's the word from police after an elderly man was attacked and robbed of approximately $10,000 in winnings Sunday morning in the parking garage of Trump Taj Mahal. "We want to get this guy," said Atlantic City Police Detective Thomas Holton during an interview with NBC 10 News Monday. The suspect had been seen hanging around a blackjack table where Anthony Vastardis, 70, of Bridgeton, N.J., won the money, police said. The culprit then followed the victim onto an elevator after the victim cashed out his winnings -- it was all caught on surveillance video, detectives said. The attack -- in which the victim took a blow to the head -- took place moments after they got off on the same floor of the parking garage, said police. [The suspect] just walked up and clobbered him and as he was assaulting him he said, "Let go, let go," because the victim was trying to clutch onto the money, Holton said. After stealing the cash, the suspect ran from the parking garage and got into a taxi, police said. The suspect told the cabbie to take him to Baltimore, Md., detectives said. Along the Atlantic City Expressway, however, the driver got word from another cabbie that New Jersey State Police were looking for his taxi and began guiding authorities to his location. The suspect got suspicious and ordered the cabbie to let him out at exit 41 of the Expressway in Gloucester Township. He got away before the cops showed up, police said. The suspects right hand may be broken from hitting the victim so hard, investigators said. The cab driver that took him indicates that when he was handing him the money for the cab fare, that his hand was very gingerly and he was making motions as if he was in pain, Holton said. Vastardis, the victim, suffered a serious hip injury. He was listed in fair condition at an Atlantic City hospital Monday afternoon, said a hospital spokesman.
